Detroit's

on Grand River.

A very "bookish" table runner

It's lovely to see a new bookstore in the city of Detroit! Owner Susan Murphy has a passion for reading, books, and connecting this community with books and authors.

Sleeping Bear Dunes

I'm often asked about my favorite parts from my over 3,000-mile exploration of the Great Lakes.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
on Lake Michigan is always on that list.

While touring with my newest book, I took some time to hike the Empire Bluff Trail along this stretch of lakeshore.

And I played around with the panorama setting on my camera to try to capture the scale of this overview...

This last shot bowed the water out into an arc giving new perspective on that junction of land meeting water.

Perimeter: A Contemporary Portrait of Lake Michigan

While in Traverse City on my book tour, I had a chance to see the art installation:
PERIMETER:
A Contemporary Portrait of Lake Michigan
at the Dennos Museum.

The Dennos Museum

Originally commissioned by the Haggerty Museum of Art in Milwaukee, this photographic installation by photographer Kevin J. Miyazaki is now traveling the region.

The "lake wall"

Portraits are displayed around the room...can you find me?

There is also a screen showing some of the quotes by subjects in this project

I was honored to be a subject in this project exploring my favorite place, Lake Michigan.

Perimeter will be on display in Traverse City Michigan through
September 6, 2015.

Learn more HERE.

Tales from the Up North Book Tour

My book tour took me to Traverse City
and Gaylord, Michigan this week.

Touring Traverse City's Opera House with my sister, Leslie

I always love to return to Traverse City, and Brilliant Books had a lovely display of my three books in the window.

Peter Makin (owner of Brilliant Books) introduces me

I gave a reading and Q&A at Brilliant Books, then signed books.

The next day I was off to Gaylord, Michigan to sign books at Saturn Booksellers.

Set up for the "meet-and-greet" at Saturn Booksellers

The girl scouts were also at Saturn selling their addictive cookies!

[Yes, I bought many boxes of thin mints!]

Black River Books, South Haven

I always love visiting Black River Books
in South Haven, Michigan.
Booker and Dewey, the store dogs, are always glad to see me!

As are Pam & Dick Haferman, owners of this lovely indie bookstore.

They invited me to come and read from my new book about the islands of the Great Lakes.

Thanks to everyone who came out to chat with me and to support their local indie bookstore.

Here I am with the Hafermans, owner of Black River Books.

Summer Top 20 & Me!

Forever Books in St. Joseph, Michigan has a wonderful event where they talk about the new book releases for summer.
And they ask an author to come and do a short reading from their new book.

Over 50 people gathered at Forever Books

The stack of new releases

Robin Allen (owner of the bookstore) and staff Diana, Sherry, and Stephen

Independent bookstores are sites for fantastic literary events like this one. The staff at Forever Books is engaged with literature and with their community.

The staff took turns talking about the new releases they've read

After each of the 20 new releases were discussed, I gave a short reading from my new book
A 1,000-Mile Great Lakes ISLAND Adventure.
And then I signed books, one of the great joys of being an author!

Battle Creek was Hopping!

Downtown Battle Creek was hopping for the annual "Spring into the Arts"
event this May.

I was delighted to be part of the event by signing my books at the brand new indie bookstore downtown,
BATTLE CREEK BOOKS.

It was great to see the store (and town) swarming with people for this event!
