Cana Island Kayaking

My newest adventure will include more than just hiking through the land.

Since I'm exploring the islands of the Great Lakes, I will explore some of these gems of the lakes from the lakes by using a kayak.

Cana Island on the lake side of the Door Peninsula was the first island I explored this way. 

[My kayak is from ADVANCED ELEMENTS and it is an inflatable, high-tech kayak. I love it!]

Washington Island, Wisconsin

While on Washington Island, I toured the Stavkirke chapel.

It was constructed in the 1990s following plans from Norwegian chapels built in Medieval times.

I LOVED my time on Washington Island at the tip of the Door Peninsula in Wisconsin.

This is a special place, and the Stavkirke is a unique chapel on Washington Island.

It is a monument to the Scandinavian heritage of a large number of the inhabitants of Washington Island.

Tales From Book Tour in Wisconsin

The book tour took me to Wisconsin 

this month where I had several events.

The first was at the 

Schlitz-Audubon Nature Center (SANC)

in Milwaukee 

where I gave a lecture on the Great Lakes.

 I then headed up the Door Peninsula, taking time to visit the

Cana Island Lighthouse.

 Then I headed to Washington Island where I had the unusual task of delivering copies of my new book to the bookstore there,

Islandtime Books, because my new book was backordered!

A very special delivery!!

I didn't have my car on the island, so I loaded them into the basket of a rented bike and paddeled them to the store. This store hosted me for a signing while I was on the island.

My final event in Wisconsin (for now) was at Novel Ideas Books on the Door Peninsula. What beautiful country up that way, and warm, friendly, "book" people!

Segment 8 Day 8 Green Bay->Denmark 20 miles

High of 78 degrees. July 21

The entire perimeter of Lake Michigan is around 1,400 miles (higher estimates include the distance around each of the lake's many islands). My Lake Trek route is 1,000 miles and cuts across the Door Peninsula from Green Bay to the city of Manitowoc.

This day took me halfway across the peninsula to the city of Denmark, Wisconsin. Actually, it was easier to be dropped off by Vickie in Denmark, then walk my way back to Green Bay.

There is a 'rails to trails' project in Denmark where many miles of an unused railroad have been converted into a biking/hiking trail.

The country is beautiful along this route with rolling hills and rich farmland (and at least one 'Snow White' fan).

The last photo is of one of the many paper mills along the Fox River in Green Bay. White pelicans swam in the river in this area, and they were the first I had seen around the bay or lake.
