Time on the Lakeshore

Here are some highlights from my time at the lakeshore this fall.

Even after encircling Lake Michigan with my footsteps and recording it in my muscles and bones, the lake continues to captivate me.

Next year I will undertake another 1000-mile hike in the Great Lakes region.

  1. This was absolutely beautiful I'm not from this area, and the second we moved up here I fell in love with the Great Lakes. I can't get enough of Lake Michigan. Thank you for doing all that you can to help preserve the beauty and explore what people like me don't have time to do in person!

  2. Great fun, 5 minute bio lesson! Thanks for bringing the Lake inland to me, especially this time of the year.

  3. I had a friend who wanted to do this a few years back. He never managed to be able to do it. Now, I kinda want to do it. What are some of the legalities for this? Where can and cant you legally go and sleep?

  4. Hi dcwestra,

I had a back country permit from the DNR that allows camping in any state forest. This is one way to expand camping options outside designated campgrounds.

While I did some camping, I mostly stayed with friends, small hotels and B&Bs along the way. I loved B&Bs because I could do research for the book by talking to my hosts. It's also a great way to support local economies along the lake.

    Hope that helps!

  5. You remind me that I haven't been over to Lake Michigan this year. At all. What in the world is the matter with me! Thanks for sharing a tiny piece of it. I need another lake fix.
